Zarafet Turkish Angoras

Zarafet Cattery is a CFA and TICA registered cattery based out of San Bernardino, California. We currently have several Turkish Angoras who are part of our family. The Turkish Angora is a long, beautiful, elegant and active cat. Hence the name "Zarafet" which means "elegance" in Turkish. The Turkish Angora, in my opinion, is a cat that is fully suited for any lifestyle. Here at Zarafet Cattery, we are working hard to perfect the standard of the Turkish Angora, and to ensure that our cats are of the healthiest and happiest Turkish Angoras around! I am very active in both T.I.C.A (The International Cat Association) and C.F.A. (The Cat Fanciers' Association), and Zarafet cats love to be the center of attention in the Show Hall. The Turkish Angora is a breed that OWNS you. They love to be around their "owners," as they happily chortle, letting you know they are pleased. This marvelous cat is a shoulder cat. Don't depend on the Turkish Angora to sit in your lap all day, although many "Turks" are lap cats, most prefer to sit on your shoulder as you walk them around the room!

My name is Jesse Machuca and I have been breeding Turkish Angoras since 2001. Not only do I breed Turkish Angoras, but I also breed English Bulldogs. Growing up, there were always pets in the home, but there never were pets that I could call my own. They all belonged to my mother and they were very loyal to her, down to the parakeets. I always felt as if I was missing out on the joy of having pets and I never imagined in the future I would have them, let alone breed them. Let me get to my story of how I obtained my first cat, my Manx named Manxzy. This story sounds terrible, but it has a great ending, so brace yourselves!I moved into an apartment in Sacramento, California where I realized that there was something missing... it was a pet! I always considered myself a dog person and I always wanted a dog. I knew my apartment complex forebode it so I said to myself, "hmmm, Jesse, let's get a cat!" Well, at that time, I did not care much for cats. The sight of a cat disturbed me, but I thought, "well, I don't like them, but at least they have the capability of responding to me better than a rat or a fish can." So, I went to the local humane society to look for my feline friend.As I walked through the Society's doors, I realized that there were no cats in there that caught my eye, NONE! I was very disappointed and went home. I browsed through the classified section of the Sacramento Bee and I saw many ads for free kittens. I called every single number in the paper, and there was always the same answer, "Sorry, they are all in new homes." Then I got to an ad that said, Rare Manx cats for sale. I called the number and a nice lady picked up the phone.I told her that I was looking for a cat, and she quoted me a price. I said to myself, "who in their right mind would pay for a cat?" She then said to me, "Do you know what a Manx is?" I said, "No!" and she replied, "They have no tails." When I heard that, I said, I'll take it!" I went over her house and saw three kittens. The woman wanted to sell me her classic silver tabby Manx, but I didn't want that one. I wanted the brown mackerel tabby, and I bought her with my last dollar, literally! I took her home and we did not get along from the start. To me, she was a scoundrel, a weasel... she scurried around the house as if she owned it, and she gave my friend all the attention. I thought, "I bought you, NOT him! You should be loyal to me, "crazy cat!" Well, my viewpoint on cats was to change.I met many people with cats and their owners said to me, "Ohhh, I have such a beautiful cat!" So I agreed to meet their cats. When I saw them, I thought, wow, these people love their cats unconditionally, "maybe I am over rationalizing!". I have something special at home.I later went to the store and bought cat treats and toys for Manxzy and when I got home, it seemed as if we instantly bonded. She neglected everyone in the house but me and she preferred to only be in my presence. Thank God for Manxzy, she is the best Manx on earth, and thanks to her, I learned to love cats and I must admit that they are my favorite animals. Cats truly are every man's best friend. My life will never be cat-less again! EVER!The rest is history, I purchased a Turkish Angora and fell deeply in love with the breed. I dedicate this website to Zarafet's Akaia,

Article 1 Before you read the Turkish Angora history below, do keep in mind that the Turkish Angora can be found in many countries around the world, and this history is LIMITED to the Turkish Angora and it's arrival in the United States.The Turkish Angora is a natural breed of cat believed to have originated thousands of years ago in an area near China and extending its territory to the Baltic areas of Europe down to Turkey. They were named after the city which boasts the largest population of Turkish Angoras, Ankara. This magnificent breed has wandered the streets of Ankara and the surrounding countryside. Rare they are, this active breed has been known for centuries in Turkey as a street cat, and eventually attained the status of barn cat, by Turkish farmers, to keep vermin from eating their food-stores.The people of Turkey highly regard the Turkish Angora and many families are "owned" by them. The Angora, as it is sometimes called, is considered a national treasure of Turkey and this breed is protected by Turkish Law. Due to World wars and local conflicts, the Turkish Angora was once thought to be extinct. Turkish zoological officials therefore, found and seized as many Turkish Angoras as they could from the Turkish countryside to begin a breeding program of this national treasure. Angoras still reside in the Ankara Zoo, and white Turkish Angoras are no longer permitted to leave Turkey. In the early part of the 1900's, Turkish Angoras arrived in the United States where they were adored for their long, silky coats. At this point in the history of the cat fancy, the Persian and Turkish Angora bore a striking resemblance. Persian breeders used the Turkish Angora in their breeding programs and the Turkish Angora became extinct in the United States. During this era, all longhaired cats were called Angoras, which also became a synonym for Persian. The Turkish Angora is responsible for giving the Persian that long, sought after coat!It wasn't until the early 1960's that the Turkish Angora was returned to the United States by U.S. servicemen in Turkey, who rediscovered this breed in the Ankara Zoo. Breeding programs went underway, and the Turkish Angora also became a treasure to those who are owned by them outside of Turkey. The Angora was accepted for Championship status since the inception of TICA and all Traditional colors are accepted for this breed. Although white is the most popular Turkish Angora color, there is a wide array of colors that are becoming increasingly popular. When admiring the Turkish Angora, one is caught on the length aspect of this cat. Everything about the "Turk" is long. It has a long, foreign body with light boning. The ears are tall and sit erect on the head. This breed has a straight profile, long face, and a long plumed tail. It's flowing, cashmere single coat is the Turkish Angoras most well known feature since not only is it beautiful, but it does not easily mat, and does not require daily grooming as that of the Persian. Although the Turkish Angora is adored for its beautiful coat, temperament definitely is a factor in the craze over the Angora. Some Turkish Angoras are known to be lap cats, however, most of them are known to be shoulder cats, surveying the home with their keen sense of sight. These cats are active and quick and always love to play, even in old age. Do not neglect a Turkish Angora, feelings will get hurt and the Turk will persist until he gets what he wants, down to snuggling in bed and telling you a bedtime story. The Turkish Angora is not a talker, and they usually display their vocal talent by chortling, and asking where you have been all day.This breed is a marvel, a friend and a family member, no wonder they are a Turkish Treasure.

Turkish Angora History

Breed Standard

EARS: large, wide at base, pointed and tuffed. Set closely together,

high on the head, vertical and erect.

HEAD: Size: small to medium, in balance with the length of the

body and extremities. Shape: a medium long, smooth wedge.

Allowance is to be made for jowls. Profile: two planes formed by

a flat top head and the line of the nose meeting at an angle slightly

above the eyes. NO BREAK.

EYES: large, almond-shaped, slanting slightly upward with open

expression.

EYE COLOR: there is no relationship between eye color and coat color, and each eye color description can include much variation within its defined spectrum, especially as cats mature. Acceptable colors include blue, which encompasses shades from sky blue to sapphire; green, which can range from gooseberry to emerald; green-gold, which includes any gold or amber eye that carries a greenish cast or ring; amber, which can range from gold to rich copper but has no green cast or ring, and odd-eyed, with one blue eye and the other green, green-gold or amber. While no points are specifically allocated to eye color, deeper, richer tones

are preferred. Odd-eyed cats should have similar depth of color in

both eyes.

MUZZLE: a continuation of the smooth lines of the wedge with

neither pronounced whisker pad nor pinch.

NOSE: medium in length.

CHIN: firm, gently rounded. Tip in profile to form perpendicular

line with nose.

NECK: slim, graceful and rather long.

BODY: medium size, however, overall balance, grace and fineness

of bone are more important than actual size. Males may be

slightly larger than females. Body is long and slender, possessing

greater depth than width, oval rather than round (not tubular).

Shoulders the same width as hips. Rump slightly higher than

shoulders. Finely boned with firm muscularity.

COAT: single coated. Length of body coat varies, but tail and ruff

should be long, full, finely textured and have a silk-like sheen.

Britches should be apparent on the hind legs.

BALANCE: proportionate in all physical aspects with a graceful,

lithe appearance.

TAIL: long and tapering from a wide base to a narrow end, with a

full brush.

LEGS: long. Hind legs longer than front.

PAWS: small, round and dainty. Tufts between toes preferable.
